The raw cacao bean has a significantly higher antioxidant quality than the refined cocoa (chocolate) and has a slightly bitter taste. Raw cacao has been used by indigenous people of South Africa for hundreds of years.
Raw cacao is considered one of nature’s superfoods containing four times the amount of antioxidants as the traditional cocoa powder and has the highest antioxidant value of all natural foods. Antioxidants protect the body from ageing and disease caused by free radicals. The flavonoids also prevent fat-like substances in the bloodstream from oxidising and clogging the arteries.
The Cacao bean is also rich in magnesium and a good source of sulphur. Cacao has also been found to help regulate blood pressure and reduce cholesterol while building the immune system.
Raw cacao is considered an aphrodisiac because it contains nandamide, a substance that induces euphoria and phenylethylamine, the mood enhancer.
Add to your smoothie for a rich chocolate flavour. Do not exceed more than 40g a day as it is very powerful on the central nervous system and over-indulging can interfere with calcium retention.
Store at room temperature, in a cool dry place.
